You have prowled the bars, chatted online and even gone visiting at your mother’s church to find a date and now you have one, but are terrified of actually following through. Sitting across from somebody in a darkened, romantic restaurant sipping wine and staring into each other’s eyes is wonderful until that same stare turns into an uncomfortable silence because neither one of you has anything to say to each other. That’s when a good date goes bad.
Once the excitement of being together wears off it is advantageous to have a few simple conversation starters up your sleeve to ensure the evening continues on smoothly without anyone bolting early out of the bathroom window. There is no need to have cue cards stashed up your sleeve or crib notes written on the inside of your hand. Just come prepared with a mental note of conversation starters to keep you talking.
Pets make a great topic. Not only is it light and friendly but a person can learn a lot from someone based on what kind of pet they own. For example, a fish lover is generally not spontaneous and likes to play it safe. A cat person might be passive aggressive and dog lovers tend to like adventure.
The topic of family is huge fodder for dinner conversation. It is one subject that will keep you talking and laughing. Who doesn’t have an eccentric aunt that everyone loves to hate or a cousin currently serving time in the local penitentiary? Besides hearing about how your potential partner talks about their mother is very telling.
Finally, the best conversation starter that will keep you talking long into the evening is asking what books are on their bedside table at that very moment. Look for a telling blush or alarmed expression. That is your first clue that it may be something they typically would hide if visitors came ringing. Perhaps your potential partner is a closet poet lover of smutty romance fan. Whatever the case it is an amusing question will lighten things up and keep you talking.
